On behalf of the Officers and Governors of the Security Traders Association, it is my pleasure to welcome you to our 76th Annual Conference at the Phoenician Scottsdale.
The events of the last 12 months are mind boggling! I won’t bother to offer evidence of the drama, suffice it to say that despite the upheaval in the global financial markets, the U.S. equity markets were open and liquid, fair and orderly. This is a powerful testament to our strength and ability to continue to serve investors and issuers, especially when one recognizes that virtually all other markets experienced a variety of dislocations. Regulation NMS was born to “modernize and strengthen” markets, and it worked. So congratulations to the professionals, including you, who collectively accomplished this significant feat.
STA has long recognized equity markets as evolutionary and, today, the many of the issues that will drive the next phase of this evolution are already known. We are fortunate to have industry leaders discussing the many current issues and critical events that will shape market structure in the coming months and years.
Our 2009 Conference Committee, Co-Chaired by Governors John Daley and Bill Vance, has done a sensational job of planning and executing an event that is at the forefront of the industry. We are offering 7 major speakers and 7 panel sessions. Our speakers are covering a broad range of topics from strategy to behavioral investing, to market models and an industry outlook.
Our panels are designed to target timely issues with senior industry experts providing the discussion and debate. Topics include regulation, options, derivatives, regional and boutique strategies, buy side needs/wants, an exchange update, access, high frequency, latency, and more.
The bottom line is that STA has assembled 2½ days of content that will provide you with up-to-the minute information on critical issues and leave you better positioned to manage your professional responsibilities.
We extend our appreciation to some 35 industry leaders who have taken the time from their busy schedules to share their expertise.
Also, our genuine thanks go to each of our sponsors and vendors. We do not take this participation for granted and consider your support an incentive to continue STA’s rich history of providing the best value – content, cost, time efficiency. and venue. It simply would not happen without you.
So, we are confident that our return to the desert will be both productive and enjoyable, as we again have the opportunity to meet our friends, who are sometimes also our competitors, on neutral ground.
We are pleased you could join us for this auspicious event.
